Solar Boat and Kayaking Workshop

Students from 5A and 5B travelled with Mr Hedley to Sai Kung on the 21st March to learn about caring for our environment. They began the day with a workshop on renewable energy and were able to build their own mini solar-powered boats. This exercise put what they had learnt into practice and also tested their dexterity. After successfully harnessing the sun’s energy, they had to harness their lunch’s energy by kayaking. Receiving instruction on how to kayak from former Hong Kong kayaking team members, the students were prepared and excited to take to the water. Not only was kayaking great fun and hard work, but it also allowed the students to connect with nature and experience the environment that we should all make an effort to look after.

“On 21st March 2024, my English class went on a field trip. During the trip,

we built our own solar boats and went kayaking. Once we arrived at the venue, we learnt some information about renewable energy. Then, we followed a tutorial by the instructors on how to build a solar-powered boat. When we finished building the boat, we went outdoors to test whether the boats worked or not.

Once we went outdoors, our boats started to move immediately under direct sunlight. Seeing my boat move under sunlight made me feel extremely accomplished.

After testing out the boats, we went to the kayaking centre. Our instructors taught us some safety procedures and basic kayaking skills. We all were in groups of two and started getting in our kayaks. At first, it took some time to get used to the paddle, as it requires a lot of strength to paddle in the water. This was a once in a life time experience and I am extremely grateful to have joined this trip. I would definitely recommend everyone to join this trip if they ever have a chance to. It is so fun and a lot of memories can be made. It is also so calming to be kayaking in the middle of the ocean after a stressful test week.”

“As Someone who is deathly afraid of the vast ocean, kayaking was never on the top of my to-do list. This fear of open water has prevented me from doing many things, like going on ships. Not knowing how to swim was certainly not a soothing fact either. Hence, this fear of mine has always been a challenge for me. Yet, as I followed fellow classmates and coaches on a large kayak with my partner in the middle of the sea – everything I am afraid of – I felt my deep fear disappear slowly and gradually, I started having fun. This meant a lot to me as I, as cowardly as I am, was able to overcome one of my biggest fears and prove to myself that I am capable to face all challenges in my way.

The whole experience felt safe and was very enjoyable, and all the people in the organization were all very welcoming and helpful. This trip will definitely hold the spot as being one of the most unforgettable school trips in my heart.”

“Dipping my paddle into the water, my kayak started moving. Last Thursday, we went to Sai Kung for this incredible kayaking journey.

At the beginning of the day, we used wooden pieces, a motor and a solar panel to make our own boat, while learning about the impact of sustainable energy resources through the workshop.

Then we went for the kayaking trip. Usually, when we look at the sea, we can see a few plastic bottles floating on the water. However, during this kayak trip, I did not see any trash in the sea, which reminding me of the importance of preserving our natural resources. I highly recommend this to all of you.”
